The Founding of Maryland
Calvert County, Maryland is one of the oldest counties in the United States. The first English settlement in Southern Maryland dates to somewhere between 1637 and 1642. British troops invaded Calvert County in 1780, during the Revolutionary War. A prison camp for captured southerners was built at the mouth of Battle Creek, near the site of Calvertown.
