The Claypoole Brothers
“Three Claypoole brothers emigrated to America from their homeland in England. Edward, James and Norton Claypoole. They were the sons of Sir John Claypoole and Mary Angell. The brothers did not all sail to America at the same time”
Edward, son of SirJohn, and my 10th great uncle, was born about 1633 and died in 1692, in Barbados, West Indies. He owned extensive land holdings, a sugar plantation and was a Captain in the militia. He a his brother James, carried on a business with each other in Philadelphia, PA.
James Claypoole, son of Sir John and my 10th great uncle and 9th Great Grandfather, a wealthy merchant, married Helen Mercer, the daughter of Balthasar Mercer, former parliamentary assessor at Edinburg, Scotland, and Elizabeth Kennedy, of noble lineage. He supported William Penn’s plan to plant a colony in America. He immediately became one of the biggest backers of Penn. James purchased five-thousand acres from Penn.
James sailed on the ship Concord in 1683 with his family and arrived in Philadelphia on the 6th of October. Previous to his journey to America and his new home he had sent his attorney, servants and supplies with orders to build him a farmhouse, to be ready for his arrival. James also had purchased 100 acres near where the new capitol of of the colony, and he settled a colony in Germantown, PA. During his first spring in the new colony he built the first ‘brick’ house in Philadelphia. James’ and Helen’s children were all born in England. James died in 1687 and his wife Helen died the next year. Both of them are buried in the ‘Friend’s Burying Ground on Mulberry Street.
