Nathaniel Sackett was responsible for setting up a ‘spy ring’ in New York, under the request of General George Washington. He assisted General Washington and Major Benjamin Tallmadge in the official creation of the Culper Ring.

John was a son of Simon Sackett the immigrant who arrived in Massachusetts in 1632. John was born in Newton, Massachusetts. John married Abigail Hannum (1660-1690). His son John (1660-1745) was Donald Scott Lee’s 7th great grandfather. His son William (1662-1700) was Nathaniel Sackett’s great grandfather.

George Washington Sackett Letter
In order to gain information on the British, George Washington sent this letter to Nathaniel Sackett, requesting his help in spying on the enemy. The letter is dated February 7, 1777.
