The historic Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, New York is one of my favorite cemeteries! After I discovered that my aunt Betsy Mann’s husband, Samuel Wilson, my uncle, was the actual progenitor of our U. S. Symbol ‘Uncle Sam’, I just had to visit.

Standing near my uncle Sam and aunt Betsy’s gravesite was a great highlight of my trip that year. It was also one of those great benefits we get from studying our family genealogy. I am happy I made the stop in Troy, New York. What a beautiful town with a lot of wonderful people, and good food too!
Finding Grandpa’s Grave
On one of my trips through the great state of Kentucky, I wanted to locate the graves of my 3rd great grandfather, Calvin Hendrick and his family. I knew he had lived in Hardinsburg, Kentucky near the home of my grandfather, Virgil Miller, near Cloverport.

Someone told me when I stopped alongside the highway..”yeah, I think there is an old family gravesite up past the gravel pit up the hill”. Well, I saw an old barn down the road after I passed the gravel pit so I parked along the road and hiked up to it. Both my wife and I look all around and found nothing.
We went back to the car to rest. I then decided to take one more trip up the hill. I decided to cross a small swamp and an old barbed wire fencing, back into a grove of trees near the old barn. No one had been back here for a long time, I thought to myself.

As I peered into the small grove of trees I saw what seemed to be broken bits of stone sticking out from under a lot of leaves and fallen branches. And then, there they were. My third great grandfather, Luther Hendrick Gravestones and my third great grandmother, Nancy Miller’s gravestones. Their daughter, Celestine, was there too, her gravestone face down covered in inches of leaves, not to mention all of the small shiny leaves of moss covering it. Celestine’s gravestone was in perfect condition.
I spent several hours there with my ancestors. Cleaning the stones, and propping them up so that their next visitors could find them. These folks were hardworking farmers and it was a thrill to lend a hand on their farm!
